What have our past winners been up to?

Health Super is extremely proud to be involved with such a worthy and prestigious award. We are also proud to be associated with Deakin University, one of the leading universities providing health education in Australia. The calibre of award winners is always remarkable.

Winning an award can have a significant impact on one’s career, as can be seen by the two examples below.

Leanne McCann – winner of the 2008 ‘Excellence in Nursing Leadership in a Rural Health Care Environment’.

Leanne was able to use the award money to fund a two week study tour of the UK to research a successful stroke care program. The program, ‘Realising time to care – productive ward’, advocates the benefits of giving nurses more quality time with stroke patients.

Research undertaken prior to the implementation of the program found that only one third of a nurses’ shift was actually spent with their patients.

Upon her return from the UK, Leanne was able to implement the program into South West Healthcare, the first Victorian Hospital to do so. Six wards have now implemented the program. This has resulted in staff having more control over their work while providing continual improvements to service delivery.

Mark Arnold – winner of the 2008 ‘Excellence in Nursing Leadership in a Regional Health Care Environment’.

After winning the 2008 award, Mark’s goal was to facilitate best practice at Barwon Health by ensuring the right services were provided at the right time for older people with complex needs.

As a result of the award, Mark was able to undertake a three week study tour in Canada visiting a number of centres of excellence.

The knowledge gained on the study tour is assisting Barwon Health:

  • provide an accessible IT system for sub-acute services
  • improve information sharing between sites and services
  • improve planning of patient flow between acute and sub-acute sites
  • establish guiding principles around bed management practices
  • improve the accuracy of estimated discharge dates within sub-acute inpatient services.

Mark has also been approached by Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton, Canada to become a research affiliate. This research will facilitate the sharing of best practice procedures and innovations in aged care within health services across continents.
