Financial planning

You‘ve probably been managing the costs of day-to-day living with a mortgage and possibly children for years. It’s now time to look ahead so that you’ll be able to retire comfortably in the next 5 to 10 years. How financially comfortable you'll be in retirement will depend on:

  • how long your retirement savings will last
  • the investments you have, including super
  • how much you want to leave to your family
  • whether you’re eligible for a Government Pension.

If you haven't established a relationship with a financial planner yet, it's time to start!

You shouldn’t plan for your retirement by yourself

It’s never too soon or too late to talk through your financial goals with an expert. Even if you think you are on track to achieving your lifestyle objectives, it won’t hurt to meet with a financial planner to have this confirmed.

At this stage of your life your super nest egg should be starting to reach a significant size. You might be looking to pay off your house or perhaps build an investment portfolio.

A financial planner can review your current situation, and develop the next stage of your financial plan. A complete financial plan can help ensure:

  • your retirement savings are maximised through sound super and retirement planning
  • your money is invested in an investment portfolio that suit your needs
  • you're covered in case of illness, injury or death
  • your tax issues are considered
  • you receive the right Centrelink entitlements
  • you have an up to date Will and Power of Attorney.

The 6-step financial planning process

When you meet with a financial planner, they will usually follow these steps:

Step 1 Gather your financial information such as income, debts, financial commitments and so on.
Step 2 Determine your current situation, ongoing needs and short and long-term goals.
Step 3 Identify any financial problems or special considerations you may have.
Step 4 Upon your approval, prepare a written financial plan (Statement of Advice), including recommendations about your existing and/or alternative financial products for you to consider.
Step 5 Implementation of your plan.
Step 6 Regularly review your plan (at least once a year) to ensure you’re on track to achieve your goals and revise where necessary.

What steps the financial planner takes may ultimately depend on your circumstances and the type of advice you request. But, it really isn’t that hard or daunting and the sooner you get started, the better off you could be.
