Financial planning

As you move through your 30s and beyond, it’s the perfect time to take control of your money and improve your financial position. You’ve probably got a doctor and a hairdresser that you trust, but who helps you with your financial wellbeing?

Would you like to be financially secure?

A financial planner can help you clarify what you want to achieve, what your investment time frame is, and how comfortable you are with the different types of investments available, before giving you a plan to suit your specific objectives and needs. Building a relationship with a financial planner can help you to better manage your finances and keep you on track towards your goals. A financial planner can also help you:

  • prepare a budget
  • build wealth through investing
  • minimise your tax and boost your super
  • set up an education savings plan
  • ensure you have enough of the right insurance.

Focusing on super

Your super is fundamental to your wealth management plan, and an area where specialised financial advice can really help. Have you considered the following?

  • Could you or your spouse benefit from the Government Co-Contribution?
  • Is your super invested to suit your goals and attitude to risk?
  • If you have several super accounts, could you consolidate them into one? Are you paying more than one set of fees?
  • Should you contribute more? Are there any tax advantages if you do?

The 6-step financial planning process

When you meet with a financial planner, they will usually follow these steps:

Step 1 Gather your financial information such as income, debts, financial commitments and so on.
Step 2 Determine your current situation, ongoing needs and short and long-term goals.
Step 3 Identify any financial problems or special considerations you may have.
Step 4 Upon your approval, prepare a written financial plan (Statement of Advice), including recommendations about your existing and/or alternative financial products for you to consider.
Step 5 Implementation of your plan.
Step 6 Regularly review your plan (at least once a year) to ensure you’re on track to achieve your goals and revise where necessary.
