How to access your super

In all cases, to access or withdraw your superannuation you need to call us on 1800 331 719.

After we understand the terms under which you wish to access your super (and provided you’re eligible), we’ll send you an estimate of your benefit amount and an application form to claim your benefit. You may be required to provide proof of ID.

Note: special rules apply to temporary residents (ie. they cannot access their benefit in all the situations described below). If you're working in Australia as a temporary resident you may be eligible to claim your super (less any applicable tax) on departing permanently from Australia. Refer to the ATO website for more information.

 

Type of access When does the benefit become payable What benefit is payable
Cash withdrawal request This is subject to preservation rules. Part or all of your account balance less applicable tax.
Rollover to another super fund You can roll-over your accumulation benefit to another complying super fund at anytime (this does not apply to defined benefits). A minimum balance may be required to be maintained in your account in the case of partial rollover requests. Part or all of your account balance less applicable tax.
Reaching your preservation age and still working You can access some or all, of your super as a pre-retirement Transition to Retirement (TTR) Pension, regardless of whether you have actually retired. Your account balance via regular pension payments (less applicable tax), subject to a Government prescribed minimum and maximum limit on the annual amount withdrawn.
Retirement Upon permanent retirement from the workforce on reaching your preservation age. Part or all of your account balance less applicable tax.
Death On death. Account balance and death insurance benefit (if applicable). Tax free if paid to a dependant as defined in tax laws.
Permanent incapacity On becoming permanently incapacitated as determined by the Trustee, taking into account Insurer’s assessment of total and permanent disablement in relation to any insurance cover. Account balance and Total and Permanent Disability benefit (if relevant). Less applicable tax.
Terminal medical condition On acceptance of terminal illness diagnosis by Trustee. Account balance (tax-free)
Low account balance If your balance is below $200, you can withdraw your funds at any time provided you have ceased employment with your contributing employer. Your account balance less applicable tax.
Severe financial hardship You have been receiving Commonwealth income support payments for a prescribed period and meet other legislative conditions. Up to $10,000 (in a 12 month period) depending on your circumstances less applicable tax.

Compassionate Grounds

Please note that applications for Compassionate Grounds must be approved by the Department of Human Services.

You may have your super released early to pay for approved specified grounds including:
  • medical treatment or medical transport (your own or a dependant’s)
  • modifications to your residential home or motor vehicle to accommodate the special needs of a person because of severe disability (your own or a dependant’s)
  • palliative care in the case of pending death (your own) or expenses associated with a dependant’s palliative care, or a dependant’s death, funeral or burial
  • mortgage repayments to prevent your mortgagor from foreclosing or selling your residential home
  • expenses in other cases consistent with one of the above grounds.
Your account balance depending on your circumstances (less applicable tax).
