The Federal Budget for the 2011/2012 financial year was announced by the Treasurer on Tuesday 10 May 2011. This report provides an overview of how the Budget initiatives will impact the Health and Community Services sector and the superannuation industry, as well as other major initiatives announced in the Federal Budget 2011. The proposed initiatives must be approved by both the House of Representatives and the Senate before they become law.

What is cash date processing?

To be consistent with standard industry practice, from 27 July 2009, Health Super changed its procedure for allocating contributions to member accounts. Health Super now allocates contributions to member accounts on the date of cash receipt rather than on the payroll end date.

The change to cash date processing brings Health Super into line with other super funds and makes our contributions processing the same for all members.

Catholic Health Australia (CHA) and Health Super have today announced a partnership to conduct a study into how patient care in hospitals and aged care services can be improved by providing Nurse Unit Managers with better support and training.

The Catholic Health Australia Nursing and Midwifery Empowerment Project will explore a range of support options such as new work processes, workplace education and training, and senior staff mentoring.

Account-keeping fee increase for Accumulation accounts

As an Industry Super Fund, Health Super is run only to profit members. We only charge what is necessary to provide members with our products and services. This includes recovering costs associated with the day to day operation of the Fund.

In order to provide members with leading products and services, from 1 July 2009, it is necessary to increase our Account-keeping fee for Accumulation accounts from $1.45 a week to $1.50 a week, an additional $2.60 per year.

Temporary Residents legislation update

There have been recent changes to legislation which affects the treatment of super payments to former temporary residents. The changes came into effect from 1 April 2009.

Background:

Prior to 1 April 2009, former temporary residents who held a valid work visa could claim the super they had accumulated in Australia from their superannuation fund(s) after they had permanently departed Australia. Withholding tax was deducted prior to the money being released.
